I still haven't seen Shooglenifty live. And from the sounds of Radical Mastizo, the new live album, it's a show to be seen. And I'm not usually one for live albums but this one has energy that is second to none. If you are unfamiliar with Shooglenifty then you need to get acquainted with one of Scotland's most unique bands. They have been making music now for well over a decade and every album gets better and better. The band members say that their blend of Celtic traditional music and dancey beats is "hypno-folkadelic ambient trad". Now you have a clear idea on what Shooglenifty is all about. The musicianship that the band possesses is top notch. There are many different traditional and not-so-traditional instruments played here. If you are familiar with Afro-Celt Sound System, then you might be somewhat familiar with some of the music. Now the reason I don't really care for is the production. This album is superb. Everything is crystal clear, except the crowd which is off in the distance. Throw on tracks like "Delighted" or the wonderful "Arms Dealer's Daughter" to really get the first hand experience. They can slow things down and still remain enthralling ("Carboni's Farewell"). I recommend this album to old and new Shooglenifty fans as an overview of all of their great material.
