Soccer Team is one of the newer signings to Dischord and there is a relation here that many struggling musicians will groan at. Ryan Nelson works at Dischord. This lead to an easy deal for the band. Regardless, Soccer Team is something worth passing a glance at. They play a very quiet brand of indie pop, not terribly different than that of Sufjan Stevens. Ryan spent some time in another Dischord band called The Beauty Pill. Beauty Pill and Soccer Team are quite different though. Soccer Team is more rock focused without the angles and confusion that his previous band had. I like the songs with Melissa singing, like the heavily distorted but straightforward "Head Outside". The duo likes to keep their songs short, between 1 1/2 and 3 minutes for the most part. This makes for a quick album even though there are 14 songs on the album. "Volunteered" Civility and Professionalism is a fantastic debut and puts this band into the spotlight of the Dischord arsenal.
