Smoosh - Free To Stay
You may have heard about Smoosh. I believe I first read about them a few months back in the coveted Fader magazine. When you take the music at face value you don't really notice anything super special but when you find out that this is music written and performed by two sisters, Chloe (12 years) and Asya (14 years) then you start to get an appreciation for their talents. This is great music for a pre-teen (and teen for that matter) audience. The music is gentle and fun for the most part. Smoosh create music that isn't typical of the 12 and 14 year old crowd. Instead the music is very complete. It does sound youthful, of course, with the two girls singing and that would be the only reason that I probably wouldn't go back to Free To Stay over and over.

"...for a pre-teen (and teen for that matter) audience." is really unnecessary here, D. Free to Stay is a solid listen for anybody who likes solid songcraft and production trimmed down to the essentials. We seem to be in one of those unfortunate periods when earnest and gloomy seem requisite qualities for music to be taken seriously and gentle fun is viewed with suspicion. Too bad. Being angsty at 3 a.m. is all well and good, but so's a day in the park.
