I have a confession to make: I positively HATE Elton John. Couldn't wish for the man to disappear quicker, and every time he comes out with another swaying-candle-ballad to end hunger or pay tribute to deceased royalty, something inside me dies. So it might come as some surprise for you to hear that I was really looking forward to hearing the new Scissor Sisters outing, "Ta-Dah", as they tend to be touted as the grandchildren of said bisexual knight. I can't explain it, except to say that these guys do something for me that Elton never could.

So this is me eating crow during the first song, "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'", an infectious piano-stomp of a number with the keys provided by none other than The Bitch himself. I'd like to say that this bodes well for the rest of the album, but unfortunately, the next few songs devolve into an uninspired mash-up of Bee-Gee/Elton John ripoffs; they regain their stride with the aptly named "Intermission", a beautifully crafted piece of cabaret-fuelled depression, with Jake Shears chirping merrily "Happy yesterday to all/We were born to die."; this is followed by the Sisters at their best, as "Kiss You Off", "Ooh" & "Paul McCartney" deliver disco-funk that's as brash, sexy & smart as they've ever been, and "The Other Side" does Duran Duran balladry better than LeBon & company. After another well-intentioned mis-step, they end it on a high note, with "Everybody Wants The Same Thing" seeming to pick up where the opener left off.

It's not a bad album, to be honest; the songs that are good are f**king good. It's just that pop music, at it's best, comes easily, and this cd requires a bit too much effort to enjoy as a whole.

This album started out as one of the worst I had heard in 2006 and quickly went downhill from there. Originally a kind of cool funk rock dance outfit who served their time playing the clubs and attracting a fanbase, particularly within the gay scene, Scissor Sisters (a name which refers to lesbians engaging in tribadism) struck it bigtime with the release of "Ta-Dah!". They have become a sort of noughties version of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and I suspect that they will tread the same well-worn path.

In simple terms, the sound does not translate well from club to studio. That should have been evident from their first album, but this one has really plumbed depths. And do the band know it? Perhaps. After all, the phrase which forms the title of the album, especially with the exclamation mark, is the sound often used to bring something to the attention of a very uninterested audience. Indeed, you can almost hear the occasional, slow sarcastic clapping of the bored listener as the album comes to an end.

Led by their breakthrough single, "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" the album never really goes where the band apparently want it to. For a start, that single alone is the cheesiest thing this band have ever done, and that is quite an achievement. I still cannot believe that the Scissor Sisters are doing this with any degree of seriousness. It is almost as if, despite their success, they are addressing this directly to the gay community which formed their original fanbase and saying look, we haven't changed.

Unfortunately, they have. I was always repelled and horrified by disco, even at its height in the seventies, and the memories of the Bee Gees, Disco Inferno and the Tavares have scarred me for life. The Scissor Sisters may have brought a degree of energy, even fun back into a genre which is best left forgotten, but they have apparently abandoned that with "Ta-Dah!". This is frankly awful in ways which I cannot begin to imagine. It is cheesy, trite, banal, uninspired and a rather crass admission that the band have sold out big time.

Whether the Scissor Sisters will manage to attract and retain new fans with this is uncertain. As far as I am concerned, that is it. I have tried to give bands like this a chance but each time they have tested my patience and sorely let me down. No more shall I venture into these back alleys of long forgotten musical genres. Let the dead lie in peace.
