Circa Survive is a new signing to Equal Vision and one that should prove somewhat fruitful for the label. The band comes from California and try and make a play for a new sound in the emo/hardcore realm, a sound that relies very much on musical craftsmanship and some honest talent. Juturna (apparently a Roman Goddess) is the groups first album and it is very impressive. Anthony Green is the frontman, formerly of Saosin, and has a very interesting vocal delivery. Not really that different than Mars Volta but a little more restrained. And, scary thing for an "emo" band, the lyrics are good and quite thought provoking. "Holding Someone's Hair Back" is one of the many highlights on this very impressive debut album. Juturna doesn't grate on you either. It doesn't subscribe to the screamo side of things, instead they focus on making the album very listenable. They can still rock pretty hard, as heard on "Oh, Hello". Circa Survive is definitely an up and coming act that you need to keep your eye on.

I think this review missed out on some of the details about the interesting combination of chords and vocals, along with completely missing out on the genre. I don't think this band is anywhere near being an emo/hardcore band. Excuse me if that wasn't what you were saying. I would call this band, more of a progressive rock type of feel. The chords are interesting, things you wouldn't normally hear. The lyrics are in depth and the album, in my opinion, was full of potential hits for the masses.
