Colby Pennington is one prolific writer. This set of two complete records comes on the heels of two releases in three years. While this pretty much guarantees a Ryan Adams' like insertion of filler here and there, the range of ideas is equally stunning. The war in the arena here is opposite's attracting, comparisons of emotional states and the like--or dualism, for you university types. Tales is full of gentle smart pop tunes and mild techno, musing on the small confusing moments that make life heroic that Ray Davies used to dwell on so well. "Wages of Death" and "The Daring Eye" are prime examples of this. Sibylline is a bit more out, its psych-drone more of an interior trip than observations of the world. Strange characters make themselves known through the murk, and I think I heard something in there about a King's horny daughters. Well worth the exploration, indeed! The Channel are not afraid to be fragile, or silly, of downright naked in their emotions. They're also not afraid of being ambitious.
