A compilation with a twist, 35 Mutant Seconds is the second in Grain of Sound’s Mutant Series. The jumping off point here is Rafael Toral’s 1995 track “Creamy Burst” which was on a Portuguese rock anthology back in the day. Working only from Toral’s brief, 32 second feedback, several artists, among them Richard Chartier, ENT, Stapletape, John Kannenberg and Kim cascone, contribute their take on this tune as their only muse for the project. The results range from almost silent ambient to spacy trip/trance grooves. The highlights are those that stick close to the original, like @C’s “int/12/46 or Cascone’s “sliver_star_noise.” Another standout is the induistrial ambient of Sawake, on “RTR.” An interesting concept, more than justified by the caliber of artists willing to participate and the results of their efforts
