I've become oblivious to Yo La Tengo. I love their music but I seem to be immune to becoming absolutely hooked on an album. The last time I was truly enamored by one of their albums was back with I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One. I have enjoyed everything they have put out since but as for playing it repeatedly that hasn't happened. I know I gave Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out 5 stars but I have never gone back to that album. I Am Not Afraid of you and I Will Beat Your Ass is their first album in 3 years and it seems to have done them a world of good. They have found the rock again in tracks like "The Story Of Yo La Tengo". Not in the way that gets you nodding your head, but in the way where Ira Kaplan's guitar is sounding more like Doug Martsch. The album opener, "Pass The Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind" is a great example of what to expect. It seems like the band has encapsulated all of what various people have loved about the band. The driving, almost hypnotic guitar riffs, the gentle, non-abrasive vocals, are all here. I think Beat Your Ass will please fans, both old and new. And they might grab some Beck fans with the awesome pop track "Mr. Tough". It's my favorite track on the set.
