I've always kind of had a soft spot for Sugarcult. I like my power-pop as much as the next fan but I have to say that there is way too much polish thrown on Sugarcult's debut for V2, Lights Out. I was almost positive I was going to like what I heard but somehow the boys have come up sounding quite generic. The album starts out strong with the title track intro sliding gracefully into "Dead Living". Now, imagine if Nickleback were a little more pop and not as much metal. That's the vibe I'm getting from this album. Almost the identical beat drives us into "Los Angeles", a decent track but sounds way too familiar. "Explode" reminds me of earlier Sugarcult. Nice track but it's only 2 minutes of goodness. "Out Of Phase" has potential but it just comes off sounding repetitive. They kind of state my feelings in that song: "There's so much useless noise that I can't take". That's a bit harsh but I thought that these guys would come up with something a little more original for this well funded album.
Lights Out is one of those albums that could grow on almost anyone if these songs were hammered into your head via the radio but I've got better music that needs be heard at this point. I might come back later, maybe. Will their catchy songs catch you?
