Oh No's 2004 debut, The Disrupt, served notice that this producer and MC had arrived and was bringing some serious funk to the table. Exodus extends that musical vision, and also shows him to be one willing to gamble with big balls on further extension. For here we have a concept album, based entirely on samples from that hoary '60's pube-fest, Hair. By blending his own powerful rhythms with elements of hippy composer Galt MacDermot, Oh No would seem to be courting career suicide, fear not. This is not tasteless nostalgia, dead philosophy or camp. Apparently MacDermot has been making music since the sixties, and has worked with noted funk drummer Bernard Purdie, so the idea is not as out as it might seem. In fact, as producer, Oh No has, with Exodus, given us both vision and groove, new contexts for old, bravery and beat. No one in current pop or hiphop would have even thought of the concept, let alone been able to pull it off. Aside from the curiosity factor, this is a stand-alone gem.
