The Minus 5 is the project of former Young Fresh Fellow Scott McCaughey and has since run it more as a collective than a band. Members have included Peter Buck, Ken Stringfellow, and Jon Auer and now with the release of Down With Wilco, four members of Wilco. Peter Buck and Ken Stringfellow make a return for this album as well. What we get is a very fine pop album. Scott has the perfect pop voice, not too much different than that of The Magnetic Fields only a little bouncier. Having the crew from Wilco in on this album adds to the dimensions of the instrumentation. Some of the arrangements are wacky but they all work. Take "The Town That Lost Its Groove Supply" for an example of this wacky style. Tweedy doesn't take the vocal duty until "The Family Gardener", and he doesn't really sound out of place next to McCaughey's voice. It is one of the weaker songs on the set though. The Minus 5 is a great little collective and Down With Wilco is a necessary album for any indie pop fans. I do have to give Jeff Tweedy credit, he sure spreads his talent around with lots of other projects.
