The Flipsides are on a punk label but on Clever One, they prove themselves to be more of a pop sensation than punk. There is no screaming vocals on Clever One, instead lead vocalist Sabrina Stewart chooses the singing route. It’s actually very refreshing and sounds different although it’s almost a throw-back to a ‘60s pop feel. Hell, they even have a track simply entitled “60’s. Guitars get trashy at times but the harmonies cannot be denied. While some might jump and call The Flipside a female fronted emo band with all the tracks with names like “I Like You and “Tough Love but that would be selling this talented band short. They have way too much pop sensibilites to even come close to the emo category. Although the lyrics are downright bitter at times. The melodies on Clever One rival many other talented popsters on the scene. This is surprising as this is their debut album. This Bay Area band has plenty to look forward to with a strong debut like this.
