Channels - Waiting For The Next End Of The World
I am one of those Jawbox fans that just about shits himself every time J Robbins puts out anything. I absolutely loved Burning Airlines and earlier this year I caught wind of his Channels project, his new 3 piece rock band. They released a 6 song EP on Desoto entitled "Open" which I somehow missed. Regardless, here I am, plugged into Waiting For The Next End Of The World, their brand spanking new full-length released by the coveted Dischord label. Don't look for the pounding Jawbox sound. Closer to compare would be his past Burning Airlines project. Melody is the key with Channels and you are subjected to that right away on the opener "To The New Mandarins". There is a slight darkness at play but it is so far down in the scheme of things that it rarely rears its ugly head. To see what I mean listen for the odd minor note on the second track, "Lucky Lamb". They polish it over with a super sunny chorus. It's a fucked up song though. It took me a couple listens to really get into this one but because it was J Robbins at the helm I had the patience. Give it a shot if you like J's voice.
