Shapes and Sizes self-titled debut album is a solid mix of catchy pop riffs, pondering ballads, and even the occasional snotty noisy burst. Vocals are shared by Thompson Hannant and Rory Seydel, with Seydel the winner in the authentic, power department. This is indie rock with aspirations beyond MTV2. Highlights include "Goldenhead" and "Rory's Bleeding", the latter song, whose title conjures up images of a bad emo experience ahead for the listener, is actually a powerful meditation that gives good space to the rhythm section. "Northern Lights" would not sound bad amid the dreck on a top 10 countdown, and "wilderness" is another hit waiting to happen. For a debut, the band has a lot of ideas that ought to help them rise above the genre's cliches. For now, that is enough to shake their hand.
