Recorded in basement studio in Baltimore on the fly from day-jobs, The Payola Reserve want to evoke the Band. While they do not reach those heights, their earthy pop manages to both shine and brood on a past they never lived. "Seasick on Shore Leave" is a gem even worthy of Elvis (Costello) in its biting wordplay. Songwriters Al Pacheco and Ben Pranger ride smart and aware through a pop landscape filled with ghosts and guides. Songs like " Brand New Radio", "Illegal" and "Antiquing" try and cobble together the past and present to map out the future. They know their guides a little too well at this point, but there is enough here to suggest that they will get more confident in their ideas and create a few new roads themselves. They call their basement studio "The Great American Slum." Adding some of that type of edge would serve them well in the future.
