It has been 8 long years since the fine "supergroup" Golden Smog released their impressive Weird Tales. With a few various recording sessions Another Fine Day was born. The band has changed slightly in the fact that this album is much more pop oriented than twang. I guess it is to be expected with Wilco and The Jayhawks doing the same thing. Speaking of Wilco, Jeff Tweedy is only present on two tracks this time around, "Long Time Ago" and "Listen Joe". The first of the two is a gentle track, nothing too stellar. The second is gentle as well but the harmonies that Louris and Tweedy pull off send shivers up my spine. I love the guitar playing in this one too. Another Fine Day starts out on a sour note, a track composed by Kraig Johnson and Gary Louris called "You Make It Easy" kicks off this set and it just seems to lack heart. Louris and Dan Murphy make up for it on the impressive title track. Another highlight is "Beautiful Mind", starting out all spaced out and then about a minute and a half a strumming acoustic guitar kicks in, shortly followed by the vocals. I've heard stories that the reason this project got going again was that one of the members was asked to do a jingle for a Guy Ritchie ad. The resulting song is the total rocking "Corvette". Another rocking track is the Dan Murphy penned and led "Hurricane". "Cure For This" is a great song as well featuring Muni Camon on vocals, co-producer Paco Loco's wife. Absent from this record is Big Star Jody Stephens, who is rumored to be touring with the band though. One of the hidden gems is the lovely "Gone" featuring Louris on his own. I really think it is high time that Gary Louris think about doing a solo album. His former bandmates all have so now it is your turn Gary.
