I'm sorry Neko. I really do love you. I honestly do. Every time I hear your voice my spine tingles. But I do have a confession. I've had Fox Confessor Brings The Flood sitting in my "to do" pile for almost two years. This never happens. I don't know how it took this long to get around to review this wonderful album.

With that off my chest I will continue. Now Neko Case has had quite the career. She has had a devout following since her debut album and the legions of fans continue to grow, especially with her involvement with The New Pornographers. There is no denying that Fox Confessor Brings The Flood (yes, released two years ago) brought even more attention to the amazing songwriter/singer.  Now I think I may have dismissed this album with only one listen. My bad. This album deserves dedicated listening and multiple listens. Just the way Case manages to layer her charming vocals on tracks like "Star Witness". The best thing about Neko is that she never wears out her welcome. Listen to the lovely "A Widows Toast" and you'll see the charm in this song is that it's over in 1:36. Leaves you wanting more and yet there isn't much more she could add to this perfect and harmonious song.

Another brilliant aspect of Fox Confessor is the amazing line-up Neko has brought to the studio. Garth Hudson from the Band, Howe Gelb, Kelly Hogan, and the wonderfully talented Sadies all lend a hand at some point or another. The Sadies even get co-writing credits on 3 songs.

Ultimately, if you haven't heard Neko Case before now, this is the album to sell you on her charming talent. And if you are a fan, still reading this 2 years after the fact, then you are just like me and have let the album of Neko Case's career slip through your fingers.

Like, but don't LOVE this album. It's true Neko is a great singer but the airy production sometimes leaves her sounding like she's singing in a formica toilet cubicle. Good lyrics and the return of Howe Gelb. Giant Sand - now they were a BAND!
