Were it not for the few graying hairs, you'd swear that Roger Miller and company were awakened from 20-year sleep to record OnoffON in 2002. Mission of Burma's return to life has been the greatest of all punk reunions. While the Pixies get the most press, and Buzzcocks seem to have picked up right where they left off in 1977, MIB has returned overflowing with ideas, having lost none of its power or mystery. From the bludgeoning opening drumming of Peter Prescott on "2wice" to the nerve shattering conclusion of "Nancy Reagan's Head", this is a stunning record, in every sense of the word. An assault on the senses, sure, but a challenge to them as well. "13" and "Man in Decline" tackle personal struggle with faith, and both tunes flow into each other and right into the record's centerpiece, "Careening With Conviction", which could be a title that sums up the entire punk era. Art is a word too rarely used these days to describe a record, and it may be too much to try and use it here. But this is genius, with or without the baggage of MOB being legendary for what they did in the early 80s. They will be legendary for what they are doing now.
