I'm always one to get nervous when an album gets so much praise. Tapes 'n Tapes have seen some worthy press so I decided to track down their album The Loon and give it a once over. On the surface one might dismiss Tapes 'n Tapes as just a quirky indie rock band but if you peel the outer layer off you start to see a hidden gem here. The album opens with a pretty amateurish guitar intro only to bust into quite a bouncy track entitled "Just Drums", which is anything but. "The Insistor" has a bit of a western beat to it coming off almost like a Violent Femmes song. There is definite charm to songs such as the mellower "Manitoba". In fact it has a timeless quality to it. One of those songs you could come back to in 10 years and enjoy just as much as you did today. The Loon is an album that most indie rock fans should add to their collection. There is hardly a fault on it.
