Tim O'Reagan is the other Jayhawk. The man who spent years behind the drumkit. And he has decided to step forward with his own songs and you know what, they are pretty decent. He has brought with him the whole Jayhawks entourage as well for this album. The songs on his self-titled solo album tend to be a little more pop in nature and probably even catchier than the harmonious Jayhawks songs he was involved with. While not as instant as some of the Jayhawks better moments, I found Tim's songs to creep up inside you and grab hold until you really can't live without listening to them. We are given a great example of what O'Reagan is capable with the opener "These Things". There is nothing immediate about it. In fact, it takes 3-4 listens before fully appreciating. This may be a problem for people just casting a glance his way. But most Jayhawks fans at least owe the drummer a couple tries before casting judgement. There are a few songs that have a bit of the Americana feel that Jayhawks kept so close at heart. "Highway Flowers" could fit into this if you use your imagination. The adorable album closer, "Plaything" is one of the gentlest pop songs that I have enjoyed lately. Songs like "Just Like You" could have easily been Beatles outtakes, rough around the edges but still glorious in the full delivery.
