Poor, poor Cave In. They had so much going for them right after the genre defying Jupiter. They had a contract with RCA and with that they launched Antenna, the worst album of their career. While I don't know what the reasoning behind the shift away from their progressive metal sounds of their Hydra Head material was, fact was it was a poor decision. Regardless, they are back on Hydra Head for Perfect Pitch Black and they are back on track, if people still care. The band has taken the melodic rock of Antenna and fused it nicely with the Cave In of even further back. Killer hard tracks like "Trepanning" were absent on their last album. But when they manage to integrate the two, like on "Paranormal", we really get a treat. Think of the new Cave In to be a perfect Thursday or another hardcore/punk band that uses the melodic/aggressive vocals in tandem. I would think in order for Cave In to properly reach this audience that they need to be a little more aggressive. Their melodies are fantastic though, and that's what makes Perfect Pitch Black such a pleasure to listen to.
