Cold- Hearted Orb! Sorry, but I dare you to listen to the spoken oratory on "The Smell of Wet Fur in the Rain" and not be reminded of '60's prog-rock pretensions. While that track may make this record seem suspect on first listen, it is more than redeemed by ambitions that hit the mark."No Screeches and Snakes And Deep Dark Menaces" is haunting and creepy, with an ominous mix of found sounds and dull noise. Likewise, though more trance-like, "Dismembered Dead Things" gets into your thought loops, in sharper ways than Nurse With Wound, who seem weak in comparison to Pestrepeller. "My Gun Scatters, My Gun Kills" is so fragile, you expect the song disappear as you listen, or at least surrender fully to silence. And the track uses spoken word to much smarter effect than on the lame "Wet Fur." Overall, Isle of Dark Magick is a great record; at least Pestrepeller aim high in a way that make its failures and successes big.
