I fell for F.M. Cornog's East River Pipe project big time on Garbageheads on Endless Stun. It was an album of gentle and at times, almost awkward pop songs that reminded a listener of a happier Eels. What Are You On is the East River Pipe follow-up to that album and while not quite as charming as its predecessor it does have something about it that keeps the unsure listening until Cornog has won them over. It's lovely tracks like "Shut Up And Row" with lyrics such as "Shut up and row you stupid fucks" but sung like he's crooning to a lover. In fact most of the songs are that gentle. One of the best is the album closer "Some Dreams Can Kill You". It has a big Flaming Lips feel to it. I'm not sure if East River Pipe is a project that you really need more than one album in your collection but it's always good to know that you can start pretty much anywhere in a catalog as strong as East River Pipe and find out what Cornog is all about. You should know within 3 songs if Cornog's music will appeal to you. Try out "The Ultrabright Bitch" or "What Does T.S. Eliot Know About You" if you only have a couple of minutes.
