Purveyors of lush pop are always in a bind. Most listeners react as if they are either hearing a retro act or some sort of ironic, post-modern shtick. No irony here. Though the Heavy Blinkers do owe MAD debt to Brian Wilson, their melodies and harmonies are just too dripping with fun and master craft to cry foul. Shimmering gems like "In the Morning" and "The Night and I are Still So Young" channel the pop masters with eerie precision. "Sliver Crown", like "Fall on my Sword" add new lush touches that breathe new life into even classic progressions. This might even be the Smile we were hoping for. "Gentle Strength" is the best pure pop song of the last fifteen years, and "Unseasonably Sad" resurrects mid-70's soul with an O'Jays style mix of compassion and balls. Boy do you, we need this wall of Sound.
