Is it Throwing Muses ("Parade") or Flock of Seagulls ("The Nocturnal House" ) or Inspiral Carpets ("Bullet Charm")? Given the hype that Pretty Girls Make Graves has been getting, I was afraid to give this a spin. This is only their third release, and they've only been around for about two years, but the Seattle band has been compared to everyone from Drive Like Jehu to At The Drive-In. They have a mighty rep as a hot live band; that may apt, but the celebrated guitar work is buried in stylized techno and funk that seems to be a retreat rather than a progression of their sound. Post-rock darlings who sound like an I Love the 80's soundtrack confuse me. Their earlier records showed some hints of staying power: humor in the writing, biting riffs and passable funk, but I'm not sure Elan Vital deserves all the hype as a big improvement in their sound.
