Islands - Return To The Sea
Islands is the new band from former Unicorns members, Nick Diamonds and J'aime Tambeur (who has just announced his resignation). The sound on their debut, Return To The Sea, is much different than that of their former band. There is something familiar about the sounds that Islands play. It reminds me of something that Magnetic Fields or Elf Power might play if they weren't quite as quirky. I think the most humorous track has to be "Jogging Gorgeous Summer". It has a very tropical feel with its steel drum flavor and sunny overtones. It is a lovely song, it just seems out of place on Return to the Sea. There is a definite psychedelic quality about the band but it isn't big enough to overshadow the pop leanings from this wonderful debut.
The album does loose half a point for the unnecessary 16 minutes of a rainstorm that is at the end of the album. There is a song nestled in the middle at about the 5 minute mark but most people will have just ignored it not having the patience. I really do hate when groups do this in the digital age. Regardless, Return To The Sea is a nice album that really takes upon some of the themes and styles that the Unicorns started and have improved them vastly. It is a listenable album from beginning to end.
