The Raconteurs hardly need an introduction but I will do so for the uninformed. Jack White (The White Stripes) and his buddy Brendan Benson got together and were fooling around writing some songs. They came up with a killer single called "Steady As She Goes" and that inspired them to take their project to the next level, get a full-fledged band and do a whole album. White turned to buddies and tourmates from last year The Greenhornes (or two of the members, Keeler and Lawrence) and fleshed out the band. For those of you who wished the White Stripes had a bit of a fuller sound might look to The Raconteurs. The music on Broken Boy Soldiers is definitely full. The aforementioned first single is killer and it is actually the strength of this song and my addiction to it that made me write this review (fairly mainstream for this site). But as most Brendan Benson albums, the more you listen to them the more you find. That's exactly what happens on tracks like "Hands". There isn't much to them at first listen but in as little as three listens the charm starts to seep out. The title track creeps a little into the psychedelic territory. This one is brilliant as well. "Intimate Secretary" brings in a Kinks sound into the mix. "Together" is a track that sounds like a signature Benson track, almost in a Jayhawks kind of vein. The dual vocals of Benson and White (see the dual attack on "Level") really make the Raconteurs stand out. I approached the album with reservations but now I am telling any rock fan to go out and buy Broken Boy Soldiers. It has the strength to be a classic.

this really is a classic album for its time period.
I think that Jack White has a great set of vocals that make the Raconteurs a little better than the White Stripes. The content of the songs and the arrangements make the songs really catchy and enjoyable.

I think no matter how much fans of The White Stripes have worshipped them, they’ve always been looking for something else to come. Maybe a progression to a cleaner sound that peeked out on Get Behind Me Satan or just additions to their duo, like those used sparingly, on Elephant. This is the album their fans have waited for. With fellow Detroit native Brendan Benson and the rhythm section from The Greenhornes, Jack and Co. assembled an album that howls and sways it’s way through an all too brief ten tracks. Also the best album cover of 06.
