This Silver EP is Justin Broadrick's idea of a pop album. Don't worry, you won't be hearing Jesu on the radio anytime soon. I got into Jesu when the self-titled album came highly recommended and I was immediately taken by the sonic intensity of that album. Silver is Jesu's follow-up and it is quite different than it's predecessor. Instead of hugely heavy sonics Justin has opted for some more melodic sonics. The sounds are still layered nice and thick but the feeling is more relaxed and possibly even grander. The opening track, the title track, is thick and nicely textured but the darkness has been taken out of it. There is a sense of hope and goodness that comes from this song. "Star" takes on an ever-so-slightly heavier tone. It opens with some fairly fast drumming (for Broadrick anyway) before Justin's pleasant vocals move in. The melody theme comes in once again on "Wolves". It is the darkest out of the four tracks though. "Dead Eyes" starts out somewhat dark with some interesting sampler play and then later on it gets very heavy, marking the heaviest moment on the EP. It is the only instrumental on the disc as well with only some vocal melodies added for texture.
One big comparison that I can draw is the move that Filter made towards the pop side of things. Don't worry, as I said, there are no radio friendly tracks on Silver but I can see this EP reaching a much larger audience.

I've definitely got the same feelings about Jesu. Justin's debut album was so groundbreaking but it seems to have held to a steady path over the years.

When listening to "Conqueror" I found that the sound of Jesu had the qualities of an aural, thick, dense, treacle-like sludge. Well, I can honestly say that this has not changed one bit with the release of this EP. No one could ever accuse Jesu of being unable to fill out the space available when it comes to the soundscapes. The result is an EP which is, at the same time, depressing but uplifting, sonorous but elegant, cold but warm. This EP takes the melody and further diminishes its importance as part of the overall sound. This technique is at its most successful in the title track. With "Dead Eyes" the rhythm takes on a greater significance in holding the sound together than on other tracks and the contrast is not altogether unwelcome. Although an instrumental, it comes across as one of the more successful of all Jesu tracks.

The question is, how far can the band take this sound? There is a limit beyond which the removal of the essential elements of music - melody, tempo or rhythm - render the consequence less music and more sound. Jesu are approaching that point to the extent that in some cases it is only the lyrics which hold the piece together. I enjoyed "Conqueror" and I enjoy this, but I am not sure how much further this can go before Jesu and I part company.
