My heroes at Sublime Frequencies simply can't put out a bad record; they manage to be relevant and historic at the same time by unearthing these Asian treasurs. Guitars of the Golden Triangle is a collection of folk and pop from Mayanmar (formerly Burma) was gleaned from cassette recordings that apparently are copied and sold on the streets. Local legends Saing Saing Maw, Khun Paw Yann, and Lashio Thein Aung share space with unknowns and anonymous singers and guitarists who blend light pop with folk rhythms into happy, droning gems.Local and regional music was popular in the states before corporate radio took over; some enterprising U.S. music lovers should mine their own cities for forgotten gems. Sublime Frequencies has already shown the way.
