It's hard to believe that it's been 5 years since The Coup's semi-breakthrough album Party Music. They have found a new home after the dissolution of their former label. But Boots Riley and the crew haven't forgotten what they are all about. The have the sheen of a hip hop party group but The Coup is probably one of the most political hip hop acts going. It's tracks like "Laugh/Love/F***" that cover up a revolution song with the keys of a good party. The beats are still in the funk territory and Boots Riley's vocals are as sharp as ever.
Some of the guests on this album include Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Tom Morello, Jesse Johnson and Maze. I would say that this album would have been just fine without any guests. Their songs don't stand out at all. I found Pick a Bigger Weapon to be a little lengthy but it is a small complaint for such a strong album. It seems that it is the underground groups that are putting out the solid albums and the mainstream artists are focusing on one or two hits per album.
