I had read in one of the indie mags that Yes, Virginia was one of this year's highly anticipated releases. I felt left out because I had never heard of the Dresden Dolls before this point. The have a self-proclaimed style of Brechtian Punk Cabaret. So being a much hyped album I have approached Yes, Virginia with caution and some reservation. And maybe it's with that approach that it took me a few listens to get into. The Dresden Dolls have a unique approach to music. They harness a cabaret style and obviously embrace it, indicated by their lavish costumes in all their press pics. As for instrumentation, the Dolls are a duo. The main draw is Amanda Palmer who writes all the songs, sings, and plays the piano. The other member is Brian Viglione who plays the drums. Palmer's songs are well crafted and the piano instrumentation really works with them. Again, this duo is not the most immediate band that I've ever heard but after spend a couple spins on Yes, Virginia I was sold on The Dresden Dolls. I'm not sure how many Dresden Doll albums you will need but for now, this one will do.

Yes, Virginia is a great album, but their (studio) debut three years prior was a hell of a lot better. I think they garnered a much greater following in Australia following Triple J giving 'Girl Anachronism' quite some airplay, followed soon after by 'Coin-Operated Boy'. When they toured (in September last year) most shows sold out in record time. And in fact -- little old Adelaide (my home town) was the first show of the tour to sell out! Mind, they only played a 400-odd person venue here. But yeah, my point being -- you certainly need both Dresden Dolls albums, and if you decide you can only afford one, choose their self-titled album from 2003.
