"So, what kind of music do you listen to?" You cleverly reply 'Everything'. So suave, and mostly true, right? Now's your chance to prove it. Whether they're called The So Called Seder, or just SoCalled isn't really of importance. What is of importance is this record (A Hip Hop Haggadah) proves all melodies, samples and beats from all genres of music over the last one hundred years can actually exist inside the same sound board and come together as one original creation. You wont love this album without the following artists in your past. Atmosphere, Wutang, Deltron 3030, Eminem, Nas, Beastie Boys, and Gangstarr.
Three of the twelve tracks are under the entitlement of 'The Cup'. "1st Cup" works between an accordion, a traditional Hip Hop beat, a whammy bar exaggerated electric guitar, and a ukelele I believe.
"L.M.P.G." - soon into the track you'll find out meaning; Let My People Go- begins with what one would only assume is Dolgin being interviewed for some sort of process for Passover. Asked where he would present his Seder in Hip Hop, Dolgin answers "No where, I'll release it" to a crass set of unimpressed older men. Drop the quick drumsticks rhythm, you get the picture from there...
"2nd Cup; Bless The Wine" aka the redemption song has great rhythms, bounce, well produced lyrics and of course trumpet and piano bar atmosphere.
Other highlights include "The 10 Plagues" featuring Killah Priest, bagpipes, and an erratic but simplistic bass line. Dolgin gets on the mic, and kid has some skills. Throwing it back 'n forth with Killah, "From biblical times, to lyrical rhymes to spiritual signs" these lyrics set you up for depth in which he writes. Even track nine, "3rd Cup; Yahu" has a Reggae-Soul vibe featuring Trevor Dunn.
Definitely going to be an opening act at a summer of '06 Hip Hop show near you.
