Do you think there is anyone who has their pulse on the entire indie music scene? Do you think it is at all possible? I listen to more music than pretty much anyone I know or am in contact with and still there are artists that I never get to hear. John Vanderslice is one of those artists. I have heard his name mentioned and seen his albums reviewed but never listened to him before Pixel Revolt. This is his fifth album in as many years, all released on Barsuk Records, infamous for Death Cab For Cutie. Pixel Revolt seems like an easy listen but the music contained on this album is actually very intricate and precise. I found I really had to be in the mood for this album. If I wasn't I couldn't absorb it at all but when I was in the mood it went down smooth. I loved the track "Continuation". It has such a metronomic quality about it. And can you get any gentler than "Dead Slate Pacific"? The production on this album is very pristine as well. All the right things are coming at you at the right time. I will definitely pay attention to John Vanderslice from now on. This is really good singer/songwriter stuff. A little different but still damn listenable.

John Vanderslice has always impressed me. You can't really describe what he sounds like to people who haven't heard him; you just end up sounding stupid and snobby. Pixel Revolt doesn't make it any easier on his fans. The care and detail put into this album shines brightly on nearly every track. I, personally, like "Cellar Door" better as an entire album, but the songs that I like on this record rival some of the songs from "Cellar Door." John Vanderslice is constantly growing and becoming more of a master of his craft.
