The Animal Collective sure made a name for themselves with their last album, Sung Tongs. It was a rough listen for beginners but upon even just a couple listens, the uninitiated might make peace with it. I did. On Feels, the band take a step even closer to the mainstream with a very approachable album, for Animal Collective anyway. It almost sounds as if Dave Fridmann had a hand because there is a little Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev sound at hand on a few songs ("Did You See The World"). But when you get to the second track, "Grass", we start to get the panicked, schizophrenic sound that we have come to love from Animal Collective. The main thing I have come to love about the Collective is that they sound like they are all over the place but they are probably the most put together and original band going today. It may sound scary but I could see "The Purple Bottle" being used in a circus performance. "Banshee Beat" is a very gentle song that is barely a whisper for the first 2 minutes and then slowly builds. This song actually ends up being my favorite once the vocals kick in, reminding me ever so slightly of Modest Mouse. This kind of continues on the album closer, "Turn Into Something".
Freak Folk? No, if this is freak folk then Devendra Banhardt is Neil Diamond. Maybe the harp on "Bees" threw people for a loop. Feels is a great eclectic album that is really different. I think the world would be a better place if Animal Collective made it on the Billboard Charts.

this album is so good, i don't even know where to start. "grass" is one of the craziest songs i've ever listened to; like you said, Dennis, it seems like it's all over the place, but it's melody is tight as hell. the layers of atmospheric noise definitely throw them into the realms of psychedelic, but i'd have to agree that this could be defined as a frenzied kind of freak folk. awesome, awesome, awesome! it rivals strawberry jam as my favorite AC album.

This is an outstanding album that really reaches further towards the masses than Animal Collective had on their previous releases. "Feels" is the sort of energenic, chaotic song that most fans know AC for, only done up in a more acessable fashion. "The Purple Bottle", "Bees" and "Flesh Canoe" all stand out like sore thumbs, for all the right reasons. Amazingly unique and refreshing.
