Taking the visuals that are conjured up by a good song to a personal level, pianist Aki Tsuyoko includes a 48 page book of drawings and photos with this release. Like one of her influences, Erik Satie, many of the drawings are done right on the score for each song, the notes, as she has said, becoming like characters in the story. The story that these evocative pieces tell is haunting and enchanting. Many of the tunes recall childhood, the awe of discovery, simple joy in curiosity. Childlike melodies compete with moving piano lines to create a subtle universe. "Owlet Hymn" and "Dune and Clarinet" shimmer and comfort, as do all the tracks here. The artwork in the book tell half the story; it is the music on Hokane that truly provides the dreamy visuals.
