Ok-Oyot System is a great collaboration between members of D.C.'s Golden and Kenyan benga band Orchestra Extra Solar Africa that sounds like a natural fit. They find common ground, and extend what they find. Unlike the star trips of Paul Simon and Sting, whose collaborations with African musicians never let you forget who is leading whom, this is true teamwork. The six tracks on this disc celebrate the guitar-heavy dance music of the region, which Golden's Ian Eagleson has been studying and documenting for years. But like I said, this in not an exercise in cultural robbery or ethnomusicology. This rocks, makes you think, and honestly conveys the joy of musicians from different cultures showing each other some tricks.
