Are the Drive-By Truckers releasing a non-concept album? It appears that way with the release of A Blessing and a Curse. This album feels just as dynamic as those before and Patterson Hood and his crew have presented a really great album once again. They are able to take the Americana thing and really embrace it. Their music is country but has that big Southern rock feel. You hear a lot of comparisons between Drive-By Truckers and Lynyrd Skynyrd (could be due to their Southern Rock Opera album) and albums like this show you why. I would say that the Truckers have now released a more consistent catalog than the other Southern rock band now. Having three very talented voices to trade off on songs helps to add to their appeal and dynamics. One of my many favorites on here is Isbell's "Easy On Yourself". And damn if Cooley's "Space City" isn't one of the most beautiful country ballads in years. The title track sounds like a Neil Young track. Obviously when you don't have a theme like their previous albums you get a lot more topics to choose from.
Had any other band released this album I would have given it five stars but with the amount of quality material this band has already released, I have to drop it down a mere half a star. Still a worthy rating and a smoking album. I would doubt that Drive-By Truckers would be capable of a bad album.
