You would expect that after a four year absence that The Mother Hips might be able to deliver a little more than 3 songs. That's pretty much what the Red Tandy EP is, 3 songs and a fourth with the title track repeated with a slightly different arrangement. I still hear the Jayhawks type harmonies but the title track is approaching on a Mott The Hoople sound. Call it a little weird but it is a great track. Maybe it's all they guys had and felt that it couldn't wait for them to come up with an album's worth of material. I wouldn't be surprised if a lawsuit is in order from the guitar riff on the breakdown of "Colonized". While the sound is completely different the guitar piece sounds just like Paul McCartney's "Band On The Run". The album starts out with guitar scronk that wouldn't sound out of place on a Neil Young song. "Blue Tomorrow" isn't all that great. It actually just seems like filler on the EP. It is rumored that a friend convinced them to get back to work and that we are to expect much more of their music in the near future. I think that would be preferable rather than just releasing two good songs a year.
