From the great label that brought us the Shite & Onions comps of Celtic Punk, comes this Best Of by the Ukrainians, who have made a short career in their own genre, Baltic Punk. These are rowdy songs of war, local heroes, drinking and love lost, with the snarl and grunt of guitar and accordion fighting it out for bragging rites. This is an astounding, moving sing-along, perfect for pub, club or funeral. There is even a cover of the Velvet's "Venus in Furs." The band that originally started out as a side project by Wedding Present guitarist Peter Solowka, has a deep life of its own. Singer Len Liggins sounds like a cross between Nick Cave and the puppet in Jan Svankmajer's film Faust. If you buy one record with your tax refund this month, make it the Ukrainians.
