Jacksonville City Nights is Ryan Adams second album in 2005 and his second with The Cardinals backing him up. This one follows up Cold Roses, a fine album. There is some continued twang that shows up on Jacksonville, the kind that makes you reminisce about the days of Whiskeytown. But we do have to think that there wouldn't be albums like this if WT were still together, that band was just too good with the sums of it's parts. "A Kiss Before I Go" sets the stage for a tear-stained album (no, I wasn't crying as I listened to it). They get going pretty strong on "Trains". "The End" could be an old George Jones song for the uninitiated. And if you want more proof of the honesty on this album, have a listen to "September". It's a gentle track that sort of reminds me of something Springsteen might have done.
Jacksonville City Nights still isn't the best thing that Ryan has ever done but damn it feels good when he's singing country. And you can't really say that this is his return to country because Cold Roses had a lot of these same elements on it. And if you still haven't heard anything you like Ryan does have one more album due out in 2005. It's a marathon of Adams material for 2005.
