Demos from the Band of Gypsys first few rehearsals, these give us an even bigger hint at the direction Jimi Hendrix was going before his too early death. The funk of the official BOG release was only the tip of the iceberg. "Burning Desire" and "Power of Soul" feature long soulful lines, a deepening of some of the ideas of his longer jams, minus the flash. "Changes" and "We Gotta Live Together", here in embryo, still have a groove and a reaching for deeper colors that Jimi Hendrix only would have chased with more artistry. Or he would be doing rap, ya never know. But it is clear that Hendrix was, before he died, trying to extend his musical ideas in fresh, exciting ways. A great compliment to this, if you can find it, is the bootleg of jam sessions around this same time with John McLaughlin.
