Rocky Votolato has made the jump to the big leagues. OK, maybe not that big but the Barsuk label is definitely a jump from Second Nature. I got into Rocky when a friend kept telling me about a few of his songs. I then decided to check out the Waxwings but was disappointed in what I heard. But the few solo songs I checked out really stuck on me and I decided to check out the new album, Makers, the first for Barsuk. Upon first listen I wasn't really impressed by Makers either. It came across as a good rootsy album but wasn't that memorable. On the second listen things started to come out of the woodwork though. The song "Uppers Aren't Necessary" has Rocky harmonizing with himself and it comes off beautifully. And there are many other moments such as this.
So my advice to you, don't dispose of Makers after only one listen. Give Votolato the respect he deserves for a very heartfelt album. This may not be his finest moment but the whole thing seems to hold together quite nicely.
