I've always approached His Name Is Alive albums with reservation and I'm really not sure why. The group has parted ways with longtime label 4AD and signed up with Silver Mountain/Reincarnate Music for a refreshing rebirth. And that's what we get on Detrola. They seem to have moved a little away from the jazz influences that were rampant on the previous two albums. There are a lot more styles present on Detrola. While all of their albums have sounded personal, this one does too only it's not quite as obvious.
After the introduction we are presented with a very electronic based track called "After I Leave U". It takes a bit for it to get going but once it does it proves itself. On "You Need A Heart" we are presented with a cut and paste soundscape that is brought to life with the vocals of Lovetta Pippen. And I can't help but feel an Elliott Smith vibe on "Get Your Curse" even with Pippen's vocals. "Seven Minutes" brings us a very funky vibe, with a bit of a Ladytron or even Beck vibe to it. The closing ballad, "Send My Face", is simply beautiful.
Detrola seems like Warn Defever and his crew have been brought a new lease on life bringing us the best His Name Is Alive album in many years, if not THE best.
