I'll have to admit that I wasn't that excited about Scab Dates, the new live album from the spaz rock group The Mars Volta. The reason behind this was the show that they performed opening for System Of A Down here in Calgary was less than inspiring for me. I don't think I was alone in this sentiment either so either we caught them on a bad day or their live shows just suck. Now it could be that this live recording was a little more thought out than their actual live show or that it is in digestible chunks known as "tracks". But I fully enjoyed this documentation of their live show. It was much closer to what I expected out of a Mars Volta live show. It seems the jam elements of the show I saw were contained a little more for Scab Dates resulting in a much better document of what they are capable of. And damn, they get funky on Part 2 of "Cicatriz". Bixler and Rodriquez-Lopez are definitely from a different planet. This album is far better than the pretentious show I saw here in Calgary and enough to make me buy their next album.
