Does black metal scare you? The thought of all that hate, anger and rage mixed with the occult or satanism have you running for cover? I'm sure you aren't alone but you must know that there is a lot of very experimental and innovative music coming from this realm right now. One of the bands leading the way is Opeth from Stockholm Sweden and if you haven't read any of my reviews of their previous albums you should pay attention to Ghost Reveries. They were one a tinier label previously but the powerhouse metal label called Roadrunner has scooped up these heavy boys and provided them with an international release of one of the coolest metal albums of the year. The mix of melody with crushing intensity has really become their trademark, one which other metal bands are being judged on. I know 10 minute plus songs aren't really marketable in any other form than CD but you have to hear the beauty and anguish that goes on with a song like "Beneath The Mire". Indeed you get the dual vocals; the intense traditional death metal vocal but the other side of the range is the more Dream Theater -like operatic vocal that is surprisingly accessible. It's this voice that has the potential of taking Opeth to the masses. I think that Ghost Reveries takes the band in a new direction (see "Atonement" for the proof) without leaving their past far behind. If you would like to dabble in the darker side of metal then Opeth is your band. If they scare you then you best stick to the likes of Korn.

First off, I'd like to point out that Opeth are NOT Black Metal and they aren't Satanic, they are Extreme Progressive Metal. Secondly, Opeth and Dream Theater don't have much in common. The vocals sound more like something you'd find from an album made by Comus or Porcupine Tree. Enough with that, Opeth have been around for a long time. They broke out of the metal scene in 1995 with their debut album, Orchid. This album broke new boundaries within the community of Extreme Metal. Ten years later, Opeth is still going strong and introducing new ideas to their music. In this album they introduced their keyboardist, Per Wilberg. This guy is actually really good at what he does. His work on this album does not come off as some Power Metal keyboardist or something equally as annoying, but more as an atmospheric vibe that you'd expect from Pink Floyd or King Crimson. This album also has a loose concept theme, but Mikael scrapped it midway through production because he wanted to include the song Isolation Years. Each one of the songs on this album progress very smootly and Mikael's growling and singing are top notch on this album. Martin Lopez's drumming is also amazing even though he was battling a fever during the making of this album. Unfortunately, this would be his last album before he left Opeth due to health problems. Standout tracks on this album are Reverie/Harlequin Forest and Isolation Years.
