First there was Broken Social Scene, then along comes Arcade Fire, and now we have yet another Canadian indie band that is bordering on making it huge with little more than a debut to show for it. That band is Montreal's Wolf Parade. Yes, there is another band with wolf in the title but don't let that turn you off of the pleasantly different sounds of Wolf Parade. The band appropriately chose Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock to produce the fine debut Apologies To The Queen Mary. There are quite a few Mouse references and similarities but there is a lot more melody with Wolf Parade. Look no further than the super catchy "Grounds For Divorce". There are some pretty interesting lines and uses of synths throughout the album but they always make rock the main course. See "We Built Another World" for an example. Spender and Dan's vocals have the sort of voice that feels like it is going to break at any time but they are in more control than say that of Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. Queen Mary is definitely a highlight of 2005 and even though we are starting to see some overlap stylistically, the sound is still so fresh that you can't help but dive right in. Oh, and they are Canadian too.
