Bob Mould - Body Of Song
I probably wasn't the only Bob Mould/Husker Du fan that was relieved when Bob stated that he was making a glorious return to guitar music after his very ill-received Modulate (I still maintain that "The Receipt" was one of the better Mould songs over the last few albums). Well, if you haven't done so already, don't rush out and get Body of Song because it really isn't the return to form of his post/pre-Sugar solo albums. It's an OK album but for a veteran like Mould we were expecting a lot more creativity. For instance "(Shine Your) Light Love Hope" is a complete piece of crap with vocal manipulation being the only trick up his sleep on this boring, contrived song. There are a couple more good songs than Modulate but I can't help but feel that Body Of Song is a bit of a cop out. "Paralyzed" is OK but Bob, please loose the vocal manipulation. You've got a great voice, and you don't need to sound like Cher. "Best Thing" is one of the pure Mould songs on the album. It's got things going on but that's song 8 out of 12. Come on Bob, I know you can do better than this. I am still buying tix to see you in Calgary on your tour but please, don't take out the vocoder or what ever the hell you've fucked up the last two albums with.
