I've been listening to Mark Lanegan for about 15 years now. I got into Screaming Trees around Uncle Anesthesia and Mark's solo albums with Whiskey For The Holy Ghost. I've never wavered that he was one of the best voices in rock music. My Bob Dylan, if you will. And the prospect of him doing an entire album with the lovely Isobel Campbell was very intriguing to me, especially after coming off of one of his finest albums to date. It does seem like a bit of a strange pairing but you know what, it actually works quite nicely. The lead single from the album, "Ramblin' Man" is the most rocking song on Ballad of the Broken Seas. This album works more as a folk album than a rock album. You kind of get a Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra vibe on many of the songs but even more folkish. It is probably the smokiest that Lanegan has been for quite some time and I would also say the same for Campbell. If you are a fan of either's music then Broken Seas should go down easily. The songs are beautifully arranged and equally produced by Isobel. They share vocals quite nicely. It just goes to show you that Lanegan can take it all on, hard rock/metal (Queens of the Stone Age) and smokey folk music.
