Sugarcult - Back To the Disaster: A Film About Sugarcult
Sugarcult has built its teen adulation from being an energetic, rocking live band. The DVD documentary shows plenty of confirmation of the band’s power and exuberance, which is what hooks me more than anything else. Sugarcult are fun, and not pretending to be meaningful like a certain rock opera-wannabe crew. The live disc, recorded at the Starland Ballroom, rocks out all the hits: “Memory, “Stuck In America, “Pretty Girl, “Worst December. Yet the letdown here is that the songs are almost too perfect; part of me wants to say that this can’t be live, that it must be studio work with screaming live sounds overdubbed. A slickness undermines this, a set that sounds more like a note for note jukebox of hits rather than any attempt to play through the songs for something more in them. But you could do worse; and they may be the best of the Warped bands. The DVD is the real meat for Sugarcult fans.
