Obviously I have been missing out on one of the heaviest fucking bands in the world. Hypermagic Mountain is Lightning Bolt's latest offering and from what I can tell their fourth or fifth full-length. The band does have a claim to fame, former lead vocalist Hisham Bharoocha went on to form Black Dice. This is one of those albums that I just happened to listen to at the right time. It isn't an easy listen but one evening when I was working I thought I would try it out and it fit perfectly. If I was to listen to it at any other time or place I would probably have skipped this review. The vocals are unintelligible and the songs are frantic but it all seems to work. Guitars wank while drums carry on a somewhat structured beat. And the occasional time the lyrics are thrown in. The production is piss poor but if it was good it would sound even worse. I would guess that Hypermagic Mountain is the kind of album that a band like Boris would love to make. It's a glorious mess that some may find entertaining while most will just get annoyed.
